The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim has brought Call of Duty's two-year run of Christmas No.1s to an end despite the fact that Activision's latest instalment in the series, Modern Warfare 3 had been the odds-on favourite to retain the crown.
Skyrim took the No.1 spot from Modern Warfare 3 last week after the shooter had enjoyed a month at the top following its release on November 8th. Having been pushed down to No.2 last week, Modern Warfare 3 has now been demoted another spot by Just Dance 3, which landed at at No.2 this week.
Chart-Track reports that sales figures between Just Dance 3 and Modern Warfare 3 were incredibly close, although both titles were around 15,000 units shy of Skyrim's Christmas No.1 winning tally. The sales tracking firm also noted that Skyrim's Xmas No.1 is the first to be held by a publisher other than EA or Activision in eight years (previously Rockstar's GTA: Vice City in 2002).
Bethesda can now add UK Christmas No.1 to an impressive list of sales achievements for Skyrim, which include that it became the fastest selling game ever on Steam in the weeks following its release, and that it had pulled in 10 million unit sales around a month after release that culminated in revenues of $650 million (£418 million).
In comparison, Modern Warfare 3 managed to reach revenues of $1 billion (£643 million) a mere 16 days after its release, making it the fastest selling game in the phenomenally successful series' history and, in all likelihood, the best-selling game of 2011 worldwide.
Moving further down the chart, FIFA 12 remained at No.4 despite a 14% increase in sales. It's the first time in four years that EA's flagship series has finished outside of the top 2 during a Christmas week – it managed a No.1 back in 2008 and landed at No.2 in the subsequent two years behind Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and CoD: Black Ops respectively.
Saints Row: The Third moved up three spots to No.5, helped by an aggressive price promotion from retailers. Skyrim was also heavily price promoted by UK video game stores this week, which will have given it an advantageous leg-up to the coveted No.1 spot.
Moving into the bottom half of the top ten, EA's Battlefield 3 remained at No.6 despite a 55% increase in sales (no doubt helped by last week's full roll-out of the 'Back To Karkand' DLC), while Assassin's Creed: Revelations dropped down two spots to No.7.
The No.8 and No.9 spots were filled by two titles that were released in November but have only this week managed to find there way into the top ten, with SEGA's Mario & Sonic London 2012 Olympic Games finishing just above EA's Need For Speed: The Run. Professor Layton and the Spectre's Call then rounded off the top ten.
