Outside the ludicrous sales figures of Modern Warfare 3, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim has set a competitive tally for the best-of-the-rest this year with over 3.5 million unit sales worldwide in its first two days on the market and a total of 7 million shipments to retailers.

Bethesda hopes to secure $450 million (£285 million) in revenue from global sales as a result of these shipments, with retailers across the globe already requesting reorders from the publisher. Meanwhile, on the digital download PC front, figures from Steam have pulled in a record-breaking 280,000 concurrent users within the first 24 hours of release.

Alongside Batman: Arkham City, Skyrim is the most critically acclaimed game so far this year according to its standing on Metacritic. Bethesda claims to have received over 50 perfect scores for the game from reviewers so far (TVG's review is forthcoming – the last we heard, our reviewer was attempting to scale The Throat of the World and may have become lost).

According to Chart-Track figures for the UK, Skyrim enjoyed the fifth biggest launch so far this year behind Gears of War 3, Battlefield 3, FIFA 12, and Modern Warfare 3.
