Now, this is just a rumour at the moment so don't go getting your knickers in a twist quite yet, but an undisclosed source has alleged that Bethesda and its parent company Zenimax have taken the executive decision to “indefinitely postpone” Doom 4 following the shaky launch of Rage.
Kotaku has the dynamite story from a source who claims that “the issues and reviews” that have dogged the launch of id Software's Rage have led to "a serious lack of confidence in the project management at id". These grievances were reportedly aired by Bethesda/Zenimax at a “company wide” seminar in Dallas recently.
Zenimax acquired id at the start of 2009, while id originally announced Doom 4 in May 2008. Other than the original announcement, however, nothing else has been seen or heard of the game in the years following. This latest rumour indicates that development was put on hold while id focused on Rage, and the lack of any news on the project would appear to support this.
We'll keep you updated as more on this story emerges...
Update: Bethesda's Vice-President of PR and Marketing, Pete Hines has now shot down this rumour via Twitter: "Re: DOOM 4 rumor, games are done when they are done and no title under development at id has been postponed – indefinitely or otherwise," he said.
In response to a query on the rumour from a well-known UK journalist, Hines was a little more forthcoming on the matter to the extent that we can't reprint his comments on TVG... so here's a link!
That pretty much puts this one to bed then. False alarm - everybody return to whatever it was you were doing.
