Internet Marketers, Stop Paying the Alternative Stupid Tax
Okay, so maybe it really is more fun to the kind of person who enjoys paying the stupid tax. What do I know.
In the United States, we have a tax called the Alternative Minimum Tax that’s designed to ensure that people with lots of income don’t get away with paying nothing by exploiting too many tax loopholes. I guess new slot machines are the Alternative Stupid Tax.
The Alternative Stupid Tax on Internet MarketersWe have an Alternative Stupid Tax in internet marketing too. It’s called the eBook. Not every eBook, of course. Just the next $37 eBook that promises to teach you how to make $10,000 a day eating Cheetos in your underwear. Or it could be the software that promises that with 3 clicks, you’ll be raking in $2,514.87 a day in ClickBank commissions on autopilot.
If you paid the Stupid Tax the first time you fell for something like this, don’t feel too bad. It happens to a lot of people.
If you paid the Alternative Stupid Tax the 20th time you fell for something like this, there’s a problem.
Let’s talk about the 3-click ClickBank fortune machine type Alternative Stupid Tax for a minute.
If someone had invented a way to rake in thousands of dollars a day on autopilot, how much do you think they’d sell the idea for? $37/month? Uh, no. $1,000/month? Uh, no. $25,000/month. Still no.
They’d be using it themselves to make thousands a day.
On the other hand, if someone had invented a credible sounding way to make people believe that with 3 clicks, they might have a chance to make thousands of dollars a day on ClickBank, how much would they sell that for? Whatever price the market would pay would be plenty.
The sales pitch might sound like this:
You might wonder why, if this system makes so much money, I’m willing to sell it for such a low price. The reason is that the system works better if more people are involved. In other words, I’ll make more (and so will you) if there are 10,000 people involved than if I try to keep it all to myself.
“Credible sounding.” If you don’t think about it too hard.
Even if there is such a system, where everyone makes more if more people are doing it (I’m not saying that’s impossible), would they sell access to it for $100/month?
No way! They’d outsource the work to 10,000 low-wage workers in India or the Philippines and keep most of the money for themselves. If the system makes multiple times as much in one day as they’d have to pay each worker in a month, they wouldn’t sell access to the system. They’d hire the workers, hire people to manage them, and rake in the money while eating Cheetos in their underwear.
If it really doesn’t rake in thousands a day with only 3 clicks, or only 20 minutes work, they’d sell it on the cheap to anyone willing to pay the Alternative Stupid Tax.
Friends Don’t Let Friends Pay the Alternative Stupid TaxFriends don’t let friends drive drunk. So why would we let each other pay the Alternative Stupid Tax.
Stop paying the tax yourself. And don’t just do it silently. Speak out now and then. If you see somebody peddling lies to the hopeful, call their bluff. Share this post with someone who needs it.
Making money requires one or more of:
Hard workInnovationRiskConnectionsPatienceLuck…Yeah, I included “luck” in the list. But if you’ll read the article it links to, you’ll see that I’m not talking about random chance. Sure, everyone once in a long while, somebody’ll get rich by random chance. Every once in a while, somebody on I-80 between Lincoln and Evanston will win the lottery.
But it’s not something you can count on. Not by a long shot. If that’s what you’re counting on…I don’t know why you’re reading this blog, because you’re not going to like much of what I write.
Put your time and efforts into activities with the highest probability of an acceptable level of success. And encourage others to do the same.
Wouldn’t it be great if we could abolish the Alternative Stupid Tax in internet marketing?

Doom 4 "Indefinitely Postponed", Claims Source [UPDATE] News
Now, this is just a rumour at the moment so don't go getting your knickers in a twist quite yet, but an undisclosed source has alleged that Bethesda and its parent company Zenimax have taken the executive decision to “indefinitely postpone” Doom 4 following the shaky launch of Rage.
Kotaku has the dynamite story from a source who claims that “the issues and reviews” that have dogged the launch of id Software's Rage have led to "a serious lack of confidence in the project management at id". These grievances were reportedly aired by Bethesda/Zenimax at a “company wide” seminar in Dallas recently.
Zenimax acquired id at the start of 2009, while id originally announced Doom 4 in May 2008. Other than the original announcement, however, nothing else has been seen or heard of the game in the years following. This latest rumour indicates that development was put on hold while id focused on Rage, and the lack of any news on the project would appear to support this.
We'll keep you updated as more on this story emerges...
Update: Bethesda's Vice-President of PR and Marketing, Pete Hines has now shot down this rumour via Twitter: "Re: DOOM 4 rumor, games are done when they are done and no title under development at id has been postponed – indefinitely or otherwise," he said.
In response to a query on the rumour from a well-known UK journalist, Hines was a little more forthcoming on the matter to the extent that we can't reprint his comments on TVG... so here's a link!
That pretty much puts this one to bed then. False alarm - everybody return to whatever it was you were doing.

UK Chart: Batman Swoops In At No.1 News
Rocksteady Studios' Batman: Arkham City has latched its Batclaw onto the top spot of the UK charts this week, enjoying the fourth most successful launch so far this year behind FIFA 12, Gears of War 3, and LA Noire.
It also managed to record twice as many launch week sales as its predecessor, Batman: Arkham Asylum, which was released in August 2009 and went straight to No.1 for two weeks before dropping down the chart.
Sports Interactive's Football Manager 2012 enjoyed a successful launch week too, putting itself in a strong position for European qualification at No.3. Last year's instalment did manage to launch at No.1, although it didn't have Batman to go up against and FM 2012 was only 1800 unit sales behind FIFA 12 at No.2.
This all means that Forza 4 has dropped three places to No.4 and Just Dance 3 is down two spots to No.5. Another new entry, The Sims 3: Pets came in at No.6, pushing down PES 2012 to No.7 from No.5 last week - RAGE also suffered the wrath of new entries, dropping four places to No.8.
Zumba Fitness refused to go quietly into the night at No.9 (from No.8), while Epic's Gears of War 3 rounded off the top 10 with a four place drop from last week's No.6.

Rockstar Announces GTA V News
Rockstar has devoted the entirety of its website to a splash page heralding the announcement of Grand Theft Auto V, which is due to be revealed in a debut trailer next Wednesday, November 2nd according to the page.
No other details have been shared at this time – announcements don't get much more simple, mysterious, and powerful than this.
It follows a series of casting call rumours and domain name registrations over the last year, all of which have provided smoke for where there is evidently now fire.

GTA V Set In San Andreas [UPDATE] News
Rockstar's debut trailer for GTA V has now gone live after a week's countdown on the publisher's website, and the news is sure to please fans: GTA is returning to San Andreas!
It's all in the embedded trailer below, which clearly reveals iconic sights from GTA: San Andreas such as Mt. Chiliad and the Vinewood sign, both of which are synonymous with Rockstar's fictionalised take on Los Angeles, Los Santos.
The big question mark remaining is whether GTA V will also be visiting the two other cities from GTA: San Andreas – San Fierro and Las Venturas – which were satirical depictions of San Francisco and Las Vegas. For now though, the debut trailer appears to focus solely on Los Santos.
There's also a voice-over from what we can only assume is GTA V's lead character, although no name or face is revealed to that end. He certainly doesn't sound like Carl 'CJ' Johnson though, so all bets are on a new character for the series...
Update: Although, could that be CJ running down the alley at the 1:06 mark? That 'wife-beater' vest certainly looks familiar.
In related news, we've been playing the 'try to spot number plates' game. There are two that are definitely licensed as San Andreas plates, and one on a pest control van that's in a different font and isn't so clear. No confirmed sightings of San Fierro or Las Venturas plates yet though...

GTA V Set Exclusively In Los Santos, Multiplayer Confirmed News
Rockstar has just dropped an official announcement press release for GTA V, revealing that Los Santos and its surrounding countryside are the full location for the game. This effectively quashes speculation that GTA V will return to the whole of San Andreas including the additional San Fierro and Las Venturas cities from the original GTA: San Andreas.
Los Santos, Rockstar's satirical depiction of Los Angeles, will obviously be fleshed out in far greater detail than its original incarnation from 2004 though (it's the "largest" GTA game yet according to Rockstar). Surrounding hills, countryside, and beaches will all be in the new Los Santos game world, which explains the appearance of Mt. Chiliad in yesterday's debut trailer.
Multiplayer has also been confirmed for the game, although no further details have been shared by Rockstar at this time.
Speculation from yesterday's trailer has pointed to three protagonists for the game, all of which appear separately in the trailer and then together in the pest control van heist. It may be a while before we hear more from Rockstar on this though. In case you missed it, here's the trailer again:

New Alan Wake Game Heading To Xbox Live [UPDATE] News
Following Remedy Entertainment's confirmation last May that it is developing a new Alan Wake instalment, further official word on the project is now starting to emerge – early indications are that it'll be a digital distributed game via Xbox Live.
Major Nelson has the lowdown, revealing via Twitter that, “We can confirm that this new 'Alan Wake' game will be a fully standalone experience and released on Xbox Live.”
In less official news, XBLA Fans has what it's claiming is a photo of the game's title screen. Night Springs is seemingly the subtitle (interestingly it's referred to as Alan Wake's Night Springs rather than, say, Alan Wake: Night Springs), and the menu layout does appear to suggest it's an XBLA game given the 'Arcade Action' mode and 'Unlock Full Game' option.
The new title has also been lined up for an official unveiling at this year's Spike Video Game Awards according to a press release from the company behind the ceremony. The awards will take place in the US on December 10th.
Remedy had previously confirmed that this second Alan Wake game will not be a full sequel, and that it was slated for release towards the end of this year. With the announcement set for a month from now, a release before the end of the year is now unlikely although an early 2012 launch isn't out of the question for a smaller XBLA game.
Previous rumours emanating from Remedy job ads had indicated that the developer was working on Kinect technology for a triple-A console project. Whether this is in any way linked to the new Alan Wake project remains to be seen...
Update: Remedy has now confirmed that it's an Xbox Live Arcade title over on its forums. It seems that some vocal fans are a touch dissapointed that the game isn't a full sequel; a decision that the studio's Community Manager, Peter Papadopoulos was quick to defend.
Thanks, Eurogamer.

UK Chart: Uncharted 3 Charts At No.2 News
EA's Battlefield 3 has remained atop the UK charts for the second week running despite a 54% drop in sales from its launch figures last week, making it the first Battlefield game to retain the top spot. Its Previous iteration, Bad Company 2 could only hold onto No.1 it for one week back in March 2010.
This means that the highest new entry this week, Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception has been held off the coveted top spot. As with its predecessor from 2009, Uncharted 3 could only manage No.2 despite a 37% increase in launch sales over Uncharted 2 and managing the 11th biggest launch of any PS3 exclusive in UK chart history.
The only other new entry in the top 10 was Sonic Generations, which peered into the sharp end of the chart at No.10. Elsewhere there was a bit of moving and shaking from No.3 to No.9, but only among the usual suspects...
FIFA 12, Just Dance 3, Zumba Fitness, and Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure were all non-movers at No.3, No.5, No.8, and No.9 respectively. Batman: Arkham City and Football Manager 2012, meanwhile, suffered two-spot drops to No.4 and No.6, while Forza 4 moved down one place to No.7:

XCOM Pushed Into 2013 Fiscal Year News
During its financial report for the second quarter of the financial year, Take-Two Interactive revealed that it's delaying XCOM from its previously announced March 9th 2012 release date to a vague fiscal 2013 launch.
It's likely that the publisher has decided to do this in order to push XCOM out of Max Payne 3's way. The Rockstar title will be Take-Two's poster boy early next year following its confirmation of a March 2012 launch back in September.
XCOM now appears slightly adrift, and could potentially land any time between April 1st 2012 and March 31st 2013. In all likelihood though, it'll arrive sooner next year rather than later after Max Payne 3 gets off the ground.

Max Payne 3 Multiplayer To Have "Elements Of Story", Says Houser News
We knew Max Payne 3 would have multiplayer; what we didn't know, in typical Rockstar PR style, is anything to do with that multiplayer, at all. But now Rockstar's Vice-President and co-founder, Dan Houser has set out an ambitious vision for that multiplayer component.
"We wanted to put some elements of single player into the multiplayer so the multiplayer will have a lot more detail and have elements of story in it and have a sort of an immersive quality," Houser told Variety. "We think that's something that is underexplored in multiplayer."
While this kind of multiplayer is relatively unexplored, it is an area that developers are threatening to move towards as a new generation of consoles beckons. BioWare has hinted at the possibility of additional story material in its co-op multiplayer for Mass Effect 3, as an isolated example. These are exciting times indeed...

3D Revamps For 2D Zelda Games May Be Next News
According to Eiji Aonuma, Producer on The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, Nintendo may be considering 3D revamps of some of its original 2D Zelda games such as the SNES classic, A Link To The Past.
"Well actually, even Mr. Miyamoto himself has been talking recently about going back to the 2D Zelda games," Aonuma-san told Gamesradar, "in particular the ones that were designed with multiple levels to the world like A Link to the Past, and taking those 2D graphics and recreating them in 3D so that you could get a sense for the depth of those worlds. That's something that might be interesting to do, so I would say there might be a possibility of something like that in the future."
This news comes a few months after Nintendo revamped what's arguably its definitive Zelda title, the N64's Ocarina of Time for the 3DS with refined textures and autostereoscopic 3D visuals.
Nintendo has already released some of its classic 2D Zelda games via the Virtual Console hub on the 3DS eStore – the original Legend of Zelda for the NES and its sequel, The Adventure of Link both arrived in September for 3DS Ambassadors, while Link's Awakening DX (originally on the Game Boy Color) was released in June.
As they are emulated versions of these games, none of them utilise the 3DS' autostereoscopic 3D display. Nonetheless, Nintendo may consider releasing other Zelda titles via the 3D Classics range, which features iconic titles revamped with the 3D effect. Games such as Xevious and Excitebike are currently available through this service.
We'll bring you more on this story as it emerges...

LA Noire Director Working On New Project News
Brendan McNamara, the writer and director of LA Noire, and founder of the now defunct Team Bondi studio that made the game, has started talking about the next project in his sights and is already pitching the idea to publishers.
Speaking to Eurogamer, McNamara said, “I'm personally just writing some new stuff now, which I've been pitching around for the last couple of weeks. Hopefully I'll have something to announce on that pretty soon.”
He's got some publishers interested too - “There are a few people interested, yeah. I've still got to do the paperwork” - while the concept itself appears to be story-led in a similar manner to LA Noire: “It's pretty interesting. It's one of the great untold stories of the twentieth century. So I think it'll be good.”
McNamara has also retained a share in Depth Analysis, the studio that developed the MotionScan technology behind LA Noire which resulted in such lifelike performances from its actors. As a shareholder, McNamara still has access to the studio and could conceivably utilise MotionScan in his future projects.
“Hopefully towards the end of that we'll have the full body stuff up and running,” he said of the technology, which was only used to capture actors' faces in LA Noire. “That could be pretty interesting, too.”

Steam Database And Forums Hacked News
The first signs of it were last Sunday, when reports of Steam forum accounts being defaced started to emerge – the website fknowned.com appeared to be responsible. Now Valve has officially weighed in on the matter, confirming intrusions into the accounts of Steam forum users as well as a Steam database.
There is some good news, which is that the hack appears to be limited to forum user accounts at this stage (which require a different login to standard Steam accounts). However, Valve is still advising that users change their standard account passwords to be totally safe (particularly if it's the same password as their forum account) – password changes will be forced for forum users the next time they login.
Valve has stated that the database and forum accounts that were hacked contained information including usernames, hashed and salted passwords, e-mail and billing addresses, game purchases, and encrypted credit card details.
That said, Valve is also clarifying that it doesn't have evidence this credit card info has been cracked by the hackers. Steam users are yet to report instances of credit card misuse, although Valve is advising that they keep a close eye on the activity of their credit card accounts for the time being.
Steam forums have been locked down as Valve investigates the intrusions although, unlike the notorious PSN hacks earlier this year that forced Sony to take down the whole network, Valve has been able to keep the rest of Steam open for business.
Here's Gabe Newell's statement on the matter, which has also been instant messaged to the Steam user base:
Dear Steam Users and Steam Forum Users,
Our Steam forums were defaced on the evening of Sunday, November 6. We began investigating and found that the intrusion goes beyond the Steam forums.
We learned that intruders obtained access to a Steam database in addition to the forums. This database contained information including user names, hashed and salted passwords, game purchases, email addresses, billing addresses and encrypted credit card information. We do not have evidence that encrypted credit card numbers or personally identifying information were taken by the intruders, or that the protection on credit card numbers or passwords was cracked. We are still investigating.
We don't have evidence of credit card misuse at this time. Nonetheless you should watch your credit card activity and statements closely.
While we only know of a few forum accounts that have been compromised, all forum users will be required to change their passwords the next time they login. If you have used your Steam forum password on other accounts you should change those passwords as well.
We do not know of any compromised Steam accounts, so we are not planning to force a change of Steam account passwords (which are separate from forum passwords). However, it wouldn't be a bad idea to change that as well, especially if it is the same as your Steam forum account password.
We will reopen the forums as soon as we can.
I am truly sorry this happened, and I apologize for the inconvenience.
Gabe.

GTA V Lead Voice-Actor Unearthed News
Well done, the internet – you've done a Columbo yet again. Not happy with an imdb profile that lists actor, Ned Luke as the voice of GTA V main character called Albert De Silva, various additional sources have unearthed numerous tweets, a demo reel, and previous rumours to all but confirm De Silva as a new protagonist for Rockstar's flagship series.
The trail starts at Ned Luke's own imdb profile, which lists the GTA V credit for Albert De Silva. His likeness to a character that turns up numerous times in Rockstar's debut trailer for the game is uncanny – a point that's further corroborated by this demo reel of Luke's, which also exhibits a familiar voice to the one on GTA V's teaser trailer.
Fan site, iGTAV has added fuel to the fire to pulling together various tweets from people claiming to know Ned Luke who openly confirm his role in the game (his alleged cousin's tweets make for particularly interesting reading). It appears that many of these are archived tweets, pulled from around about the time GTA V's debut trailer was released.
And that's not all. Those of you who followed the GTA V rumour mill prior to its official announcement may recall a couple of casting call listings from publisher Take-Two Interactive. One of these in particular listed a character called Kevin De Silva who was described as:

UK Chart: Shock As Modern Warfare 3 Debuts At No.1 News
As sure as death and taxes, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has topped the UK chart in its first week on sale, tallying more in revenue than Call of Duty: Black Ops managed last year with unit sales coming in on an even footing.
This is according to Chart-Track data, which goes on to reveal that these Modern Warfare 3's revenues are higher than the opening weekend box office gross of all four of the last Harry Potter films combined.
The news follows Activision's announcement last week of 6.5 million unit sales and $400 million (£251 million) in revenues on the first day of sales in the UK and North America alone. These figures broke the world record for day-one sales of an entertainment product, which is the third year in succession that the Call of Duty series has managed that feat.
Elsewhere Bethesda's The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim came home in a mighty second place for its first week and marked the fifth biggest launch so far this year (behind Gears of War 3, Battlefield 3, FIFA 12 and, of course, Modern Warfare 3). It was the biggest ever opening week in the UK for publisher Bethesda as Skyrim more than doubled the launch sales of last year's Fallout: New Vegas.
These two new entries effectively pushed Battlefield 3 and Just Dance 3 down two spots to No.3 and No.5 respectively, while Uncharted 3 suffered a four-spot drop to No.6. FIFA 12 weathered the storm most successfully with a one position demotion to No.4.
There was a new entry at No.7 for Mind Candy's Moshi Monsters: Moshling Zoo on DS, while Batman: Arkham City dropped four spots to No.8 and Zumba Fitness hung-on to the top ten for the 33rd week running at No.9. Buoyed by a new Wii hardware bundle, Nintendo's Wii Party surged back up the chart 28 places to No.10 after a 35-week absence from the top ten.

Skyrim Ships 7 Million, Sells Over 3.5 Million In Two Days News
Outside the ludicrous sales figures of Modern Warfare 3, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim has set a competitive tally for the best-of-the-rest this year with over 3.5 million unit sales worldwide in its first two days on the market and a total of 7 million shipments to retailers.
Bethesda hopes to secure $450 million (£285 million) in revenue from global sales as a result of these shipments, with retailers across the globe already requesting reorders from the publisher. Meanwhile, on the digital download PC front, figures from Steam have pulled in a record-breaking 280,000 concurrent users within the first 24 hours of release.
Alongside Batman: Arkham City, Skyrim is the most critically acclaimed game so far this year according to its standing on Metacritic. Bethesda claims to have received over 50 perfect scores for the game from reviewers so far (TVG's review is forthcoming – the last we heard, our reviewer was attempting to scale The Throat of the World and may have become lost).
According to Chart-Track figures for the UK, Skyrim enjoyed the fifth biggest launch so far this year behind Gears of War 3, Battlefield 3, FIFA 12, and Modern Warfare 3.

UK Chart: Modern Warfare 3 Records 'Double-Kill' News
Despite an 87% drop in sales over its launch figures last week, Activision's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has retained the No.1 spot in its second week on the UK charts as the series has done for the last four years in a row.
The big news this week, however, was an influx of new releases into the top 10 as the game industry belched out one last volley of Christmas launches before the release schedules go relatively quiet until next year.
Assassin's Creed: Revelations debuted at No.2, Saints Row: The Third came in at No.4, Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary surfaced at No.6, and Nintendo enjoyed two new entries into the top 10 with The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword and Super Mario 3D Land at No.7 and No.9 respectively.
This all means sizeable demotions for some of last week's top 10 titles, with Battlefield 3 and Just Dance 3 both dropping five places to No.8 and No.10 respectively. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and FIFA 12 were the most resilient titles, with the former slipping one spot to No.3 and FIFA 12 also dropping one position to No.5.
A number of other notable new entries failed to make the top 10, with EA's Need For Speed: The Run just missing out at No.11, LEGO Harry Potter: Years 5-7 slotting in at No.13, and SEGA's Mario & Sonic London 2012 Olympic Games launching at No.20 (that last title may enjoy a resurgence in sales as the Olympic Games move into full swing next year though).
Despite some positive feedback from a small handful of reviews, Kinect: Disneyland Adventures only just managed to make it into the top 40 at No.39 on its launch week.

EA Makes Good On PS3 Battlefield 3 Pledge News
At E3 earlier this year, EA made a promise that PS3 owners who purchase a copy of Battlefield 3 will receive a free copy of the downloadable game Battlefield 1943 as bonus content. When BF3 was released last month and failed to come with this promised content, naturally consumers were a bit miffed.
So miffed, in fact, that some of them filed a class action lawsuit against EA demanding their promised copy of Battlefield 1943. Alongside this threat of legal action, EA released belated information on how PS3 gamers can get hold of their free content via PSN after all.
You can find the full details of how and when BF1943 will be made available in each territory (starting in Europe next week) through here, with EA conceding that “there have been some misunderstandings” over the whole issue.
In the company's defence, it did post that update a number of days before reports of a class action lawsuit surfaced, and also the tweet that originally appeared to withdraw the offer didn't explicitly state that no copy of BF1943 would be made available whatsoever. Instead, it merely conceeded that it wasn't on the disk of Battlefield 3 copies for PS3:
“In lieu of 1943 being available on disk for PS3 customers, EA has made all BF3 expansions available early to PS3 customers,” read the tweet from EA's Battlefield account last month.
Whether it's a genuine misunderstanding or a bit of corporate mischief, at least it's getting sorted...

Sony To Avoid PS4 Launch "Significantly Later" Than Xbox 720 News
With Nintendo's next-gen Wii U console confirmed for launch next year, and rumours strongly pointing towards a 2012 announcement at the very least for Microsoft's next Xbox, the one remaining platform holder has so far managed to avoid any heavy doses of speculation surrounding an estimated time or arrival for its next console.
But now Sony Computer Entertainment Europe's President and CEO, Jim Ryan has provided a clear indication of the company's intentions with the PlayStation 4 against those of its competitors: "I think we would consider it undesirable to be significantly later than the competition

UK Chart: Modern Warfare 3 Still Top News
And you can get used to that headline now in the weeks leading up to Christmas as Modern Warfare 3 makes Activision's bid for a third consecutive year of CoD Christmas No.1s on the UK chart.
Whether or not Modern Warfare 3 can pull-off an unbroken chain of No.1s up until then or, indeed, whether FIFA can spoil CoD's Christmas No.1 party (as it last did in 2008) is another question altogether, but right now Activision's shooter is looking strong with a trail of three consecutive No.1s since its launch (a feat that Black Ops didn't manage last year).
It's on that streak with a distinct lack of high-profile challengers remaining on the release schedules too – the only new releases this week were WWE '12, which came in at No.6, and Nintendo's latest Professor Layton title for DS one spot behind that.
Elsewhere it was business as usual, more or less: Assassin's Creed: Revelations stayed put at No.2, as did FIFA 12 at No.5 despite enjoying a 22% increase in sales. The only other title across the top 10 to increase its sales over last week was Just Dance 3, which moved up two places to No.8.
Ubisoft's dancing game was also one of only two titles to move upwards on the top 10 this week, the other being Saints Row: The Third (up one to No.3). The remaining three titles across the top 10 all suffered one spot drops: The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim at No.4, Battlefield 3 at No.9, and Super Mario 3D Land at No.10.

LA Noire Creator's New Game Is 'Whore Of The Orient' News
Just weeks after Brendan McNamara spoke in vague terms about his next game, news has emerged linking the LA Noire writer/director to a game project titled 'Whore of the Orient' from the same studio that produces Warner Bros' Happy Feet CGI movies.
In an interview on Australian website Financial Review, Happy Feet writer/director, George Miller revealed that the interactive arm of his film production company, Kennedy-Miller Mitchell has acquired the rights for McNamara's next project.
The title 'Whore of the Orient' appears to refer to the Chinese city of Shanghai, which is sometimes idiomatically called 'The Whore of The Orient, Paris of the East'. Precisely how this fits into McNamara's previous vague and tantalising description of the game remains unclear:
“It's pretty interesting. It's one of the great untold stories of the twentieth century. So I think it'll be good,” McNamara said of the game earlier this month. We'll let you know more as we get it, although don't expect anything in the immediate future – by the sound of it, McNamara and Kennedy-Miller Mitchell Interactive are in pre-production on the project at the moment.

UK Chart: Modern Warfare 3 Completes A Month On Top News
Activision's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has completed a full month atop the UK charts since its launch at the start of November, edging it closer to the Call of Duty series' longest run of No.1s when Modern Warfare 2 recorded nine straight in 2009/10.
Overall though, it was a top ten that remained fairly quiet with only one new entry, Mario Kart 7 at No.8 (a pretty solid performance for the title considering the Nintendo 3DS' relatively low installed base in the UK). Only two titles managed to move up the top ten – Just Dance 3 gained four spots up to No.4 and FIFA 12 dribbled past three spots to No.2.
EA's flagship footie game will likely be the strongest contender to pinch the Christmas No.1 spot from Modern Warfare 3 now, although the blockbuster FPS did enjoy a 2% increase in sales this week and recorded 55,000 more unit sales than FIFA 12.
Elsewhere, Assassin's Creed: Revelations and TESV: Skyrim were down one place each to No.3 and No.5, while Saints Row: The Third was this week's biggest loser (down three places to No.6). Three non-movers then rounded off the top ten with the latest Professor Layton, Battlefield 3, and Super Mario 3D Land coming in at No.7, No.9, and No.10 respectively.

2K Games Reveals The Darkness II's 'Vendettas' Mode News
2K Games has announced a new mode for Digital Extreme's incoming comic book-inspired sequel, The Darkness II, that will bring 4 player co-op to the series for the first time.
Judging by the press release, this 'Vendettas' co-op mode will be separate from the main single-player campaign but is set to riff alongside Jackie Estacado's main plot.
Four new characters will be playable in 'Vendettas' (Inugami, Shoshanna, Jimmy Wilson, and J.P. DuMond), each with their own specific weapons and combat styles that have been helpfully explained in 2K Games' trailer below (you can read our recent preview of the game here).

Sledgehammer Games Hiring For New Call Of Duty Title News
Sledgehammer Games – the Activision studio that teamed-up with Infinity Ward on Modern Warfare 3's development – is now hiring for positions within its Call of Duty team on an “unannounced high-end console title”.
“We are actively recruiting top talent for our Call of Duty development team,” reads one job ad for a Generalist Engineer position at the studio.
A paired job ad for a Senior Online Engineer then reads: “The candidate will be involved in the creation of multiplayer game modes and online community features for an unannounced high-end console title.”
It's safe to conclude, then, that Sledgehammer is on the Call of Duty warpath once again after aiding Infinity Ward with the development of MW3's single-player campaign, and that the Call of Duty project it's undertaking is not DLC for an existing Call of Duty title but a new game instead.
The mystery that remains is whether this unannounced CoD title is the sci-fi, third-person action game that Sledgehammer shelved earlier in the year to focus on MW3's development, or an all-new CoD project from scratch. Judging by General Manager, Glen Schofield's most recent admittance that Activision and Sledgehammer will "probably cancel" the previous third-person project, we'll bet good money it's a new CoD game altogether.
More as we get it...

The Last Guardian's Executive Producer Resigns News
Yoshifusa Hayama, the Executive Producer on The Last Guardian at Sony's Team Ico studio, has resigned from his position at the company following a four year stint as the Vice-President of Sony Computer Entertainment.
Hayama-san will now join Newscorp's Bossa studio as its Creative Director, where he will spearhead the company's first 3D social game. “Together at Bossa we have plans to bring a plethora of games to Facebook and eventually other appropriate social media channels, which include 3D elements and can be enjoyed by all age and interest groups,” Hayama-san said (thanks, Develop).
The news comes following a heap of speculation surrounding the continued involvement of The Last Guardian's Lead Designer and Director, Fumito Ueda, on the project. Reports circled last week suggesting he'd departed the Team Ico studio and would finish the game in a freelance capacity – a tweet from Ueda-san two days ago confirmed that The Last Guardian had not been cancelled.
It's also now been reported that Sony has a company-wide gagging order preventing its employees from publicly discussing Ueda-san's current role at the company. Tearing the facts from conjecture at this stage is far from easy, although the news surrounding Ueda-san and now Hayama-san's confirmed departure are hardly good omens for The Last Guardian.
At the very least, it appears as if Team Ico's long-delayed title, which has been missing in action from all the major game conventions this year with no sign of a revised release date (having previously been slated for a 2011 launch), is still alive even if it has taken a bit of a pummelling of late. Hopefully Sony will be able to clear up some of the speculation surrounding the game in the not too distant future...

Miyamoto Says He Might Step Down, Nintendo Denies It News
When it comes to games designers, they don't come more highly respected, formative, or critically lauded than Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto. So, when the creator of Mario and Zelda mentions the possibility of retirement, naturally the game industry's ears prick up and listen intently.
“Inside our office, I’ve been recently declaring, ‘I’m going to retire, I’m going to retire,’” Miyamoto-san told Wired. “I’m not saying that I’m going to retire from game development altogether. What I mean by retiring is, retiring from my current position.”
“What I really want to do is be in the forefront of game development once again myself,” he continued. “Probably working on a smaller project with even younger developers. Or I might be interested in making something that I can make myself, by myself. Something really small.”
Naturally, this has left Nintendo's PR department all aflutter – comments like this from somebody as important as Miyamoto-san can even drive down Nintendo's stock prices, a point not lost in a Reuters report that carries this quote from an official Nintendo spokesperson:
"This is absolutely not true," the spokesperson said. "There seems to have been a misunderstanding. He has said all along that he wants to train the younger generation.”
"He has no intention of stepping down. Please do not be concerned," the statement added.
Personally, we're not the slightest bit concerned – it's hard to imagine anything more appealing than Shigeru Miyamoto getting back to his development roots by creating more personal projects again. If there's one thing we are worried about though, it's that Nintendo executives won't grant his wishes for fear that his absence from the company's biggest products and icons might harm its image.

OnLive has addressed the issue of a control method by making most of its catalogue of nearly 200 games compatible with its wireless OnLive controller on tablets – you can purchase the controller from the company's site at a cost of £39.99.
In addition to this, 25 games from the catalogue have been adapted with touch screen controls that utilise a virtual controller or keyboard/mouse array, while new title to the service, LA Noire even comes with a native set of touch-screen controls.
Although not currently available in the UK, US customers will be able to link up their compatible devices with 4G internet connections, effectively enabling top-tier home console gaming on-the-move for the first time, ever.
It's certainly a new frontier for gaming, although the big question mark is whether a demand for this kind of portable gaming experience actually exists. With the portable market moving towards bite-sized gaming on smartphones and traditional handheld consoles from Sony and Nintendo losing market share as a result, it's hard to see where a portable triple-A game fits into all of this.
“Today marks a major milestone: OnLive is now delivering the latest, console-class, top-tier games - literally to your fingertips - on mobile tablets and phones for instant on-demand play anywhere, anytime,” said Steve Perlman, OnLive Founder and CEO. “Through the free OnLive app, tablet and smartphone gamers can play top console and PC titles like Assassins Creed: Revelations and L.A. Noire – one of the most highly acclaimed, graphically sophisticated games to date – with exclusive OnLive Cloud Touch controls or with the new mobile-compatible OnLive Wireless Controller. Tablets and smartphones, the fastest-growing consumer product categories in history, are now capable of running the hottest, highest-end games. Gaming and mobile devices will never be the same.”

Joe Danger Coming To XBLA Next Week News
Microsoft has confirmed that Hello Games' Joe Danger: Special Edition will be released over Xbox Live Arcade next week on December 14th, when it will bring a new Laboratory mode and 50 new levels to the original game that was released via PSN last year.
There's no word on a price as yet, although we'd be more than a little surprised if it doesn't come in at the standard 1200 Microsoft Points (£10.20) tag for a new XBLA title.

Sony Confirms Ueda's Departure From Team Ico News
Sony has confirmed that the Director and Lead Designer of Team Ico's long-delayed and eagerly anticipated game The Last Guardian, Fumito Ueda has left the company and will now complete the project's development on a contract basis.
Gamasutra is reporting the official news from a Sony statement which assures fans that Ueda-san is "committed to completing" the game, which the company hasn't publicly displayed since the 2010 Tokyo Game Show over a year ago.
A trailer was revealed at that time and a 2011 release window had been tentatively placed on the title, although Sony has been relatively quiet about the project since with a lack of new screens or trailers – a lone four-page feature in Japanese mag, Famitsu is the only thing to have broken this radio silence.
Further doubt was cast on the game's development last week after its Executive Producer, Yoshifusa Hayama departed Sony to join Newscorp's start-up social game studio, Bossa. The real question surrounding Team Ico's future, however, is whether it will remain open after The Last Guardian is released.
The studio's previous titles, Shadow of the Colossus and Ico, are two of the most critically revered games of the last decade, but they're also intrinsically tied to Ueda-san's renowned artistic vision – a Team Ico game without his input may well end up lacking the studio's identity.
We'll have to wait and see whether Sony can develop the talent to maintain Team Ico in Ueda-san's wake, or indeed whether it decides to shut the studio down altogether after The Last Guardian's completion.

Miyamoto Steadies The Boat, Definitely Isn't Retiring News
Last week, Shigeru Miyamoto temporarily shocked the game world with talk of his retirement – we say temporarily because Nintendo were very quick to send out a PR communiqué clarifying that this was not, in fact, the case and Miyamoto-san has no intention of stepping down.
To hammer that point home, Miyamoto-san has now spoken publicly on the subject again, telling the San Francisco Chronicle, "Nothing has changed, and nothing will be changed in the near future as to my role inside of the company."
And all that talk of him focusing on smaller projects? Another miscommunication it seems: "Whenever we try to create something brand new, we have to start from a very small, capable team. When a big company is trying to do something really new, it's not a good idea for many people to work on it from the start."
So he is working on something new then? "Until the time that we are ready to commercialise it, it's not something we can disclose," he told the publication.
Panic over then. Personally, we're a little disappointed that Miyamoto-san isn't going to be working on smaller, more personal projects in future (as initial reports had indicated) and although his initial quotes did seem to be pretty clear, the margins for misunderstanding through translation are vast.
We've conducted hundreds of interviews with Japanese devs through a translator in the past and, given the different turns of phrase and precise meanings of words in each culture, misquotes are commonplace and inevitable.
It's probably not that the journalist has reworded the response to fit their article, and will more likely be that the translated response is a touch off the mark of what the developer actually said. It seems highly likely that this is what's happened here, so drama over folks! Return to your business...

Skyrim Is The Fastest Selling Game Ever On Steam News
Bethesda and Valve have revealed that The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is the fastest selling game on Steam in the digital-download service's eight-year history.
"Skyrim is the fastest selling title in Steam's history" said Jason Holtman, Director of Business Development at Valve Corporation. "Bethesda's commitment to and understanding of the PC as a gaming platform shows in the great review scores, spectacular launch, and continued high player numbers that Skyrim has received. We are delighted that Bethesda chose to use Steamworks to support Skyrim both at retail and digitally."
That quote came from a press release that Bethesda sent out to announce 10 million total unit sales for Skyrim worldwide since its launch on November 11th. This sales tally adds up to an impressive total revenue figure of $650 million (£418 million) across its three platforms.
It may not match the record breaking $1 billion (£643 million) of revenue that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 managed in the 16 days following its release, but it's likely that Skyrim has enjoyed the next best sales tally for a game this year.
Bethesda revealed that its triumphant PC version has so far outsold all other games on the platform in North America by a factor of three to one for the month of November, evidently trumping the maligned piracy issues faced by the platform.
